Studies:
Dry eye symptoms:
- 22 patients with dry eye symptoms were treated with 160 mg of bilberry extract. After 30 days, the Ocular Surface Disease Index was statistically improved in the bilberry group compared to placebo.
Diabetic Retinopathy
- 510 mg daily intake of Bilberry Fruit Extract over 1 year on patients with diabetic retinopathy was reported a gradual improvement in vision contrast sensitivity.
Eye Fatigue Symptoms:
40 pilots as test subjects with 400 mg bilberry anthocyanins taken before flight. Subjects reported reduced visual fatigue and shorter-lived post-dazzling after-images.

Blood Glucose Control
- Bilberry fruit extract significantly reduced the blood glucose concentration and
enhanced insulin sensitivity. Patients with Type 2 Diabetic Mellitus who ingested a single oral dose of bilberry fruit extract (standardized 36% anthocyanins) had lower postprandial insulin and glucose blood levels than the placebo group.

Skin protective effect against UV
Bilberry fruit extract was able to reduce UVA- and UVB-induced damage in a human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT).

Lipid Profile Management
- Study found that 320mg / day of Bilberry extracts improved lipid profile by increasing high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) & decreasing LDL cholesterol when taken for 8 to 12 weeks. C-reactive protein (hsCRP), soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), and plasma IL-1β were significantly decreased.
Abbreviation:
sVCAM-1 : Hypertension, Vascular inflammation,
hsCRP: acute phase reactant protein during inflammation / infection process
IL-1 β: potent pro-inflammatory cytokine produced by cells of the innate immune system
